A dream come true for Dr Ruit in Nepal
The Fred Hollows Foundation, in partnership with Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology (TIO), has opened the first community eyecare facility in Nepal’s Madhesh Province - The Nijgadh Tilganga Community Eye Hospital. More than one million people in Nepal live with some form of vision loss. Madhesh Province has the second-highest prevalence of blindness in the country, yet an overwhelming majority of vision loss is avoidable and can be treated through existing, highly cost-effective interventions. With advanced treatment options and a focus on sustainability through renewable energy, this hospital represents a brighter, healthier future for the region.

Nepalese youths become Russian mercenaries
There are Nepalese nationals who have joined the war in Ukraine, having been recruited as mercenaries for Russia. Participation in the Ukraine war is currently illegal in Nepal. Families are urging the government to take action to bring their loved ones back, as many remain missing on the battlefield. This report investigates the harsh reality faced by young Nepalis who feel they have no choice but to enter a war zone in search of income.

This Man's Story Shows Why We Must Cure Untreated Blindness
50-year-old Rambilash Majhi had been living with cataract blindness for seven years. His family is too poor to afford his surgery, the hospital is too far away from their home, and Rambilasi also fears surgery, believing the doctors will remove his eyes if he undergoes cataract surgery. In December, 2022, a screening team from the Tej Kohli & Ruit Foundation identified and cured his blindness. This is his story.

Embracing data, locally | A Frontier Tech Hub film
Every year in Nepal, the Rajapur Municipality is impacted by floods. There is data available to help plan against these shocks, but it is not currently utilised on a local level. This short film tells the story of the humans in Rajapur and Katmandu working to engage local communities to prepare against the impacts of climate shocks, using data pulled from geospatial data from satellites and data from sensors on the ground.

62 People Cured of Needless Blindness in Manang, Nepal
Nestled in the heart of Nepal's Annapurna Region, Manang district in Nepal boasts of abundant scenic beauty. Sadly, within the age-old villages in the traditional homes, many live a life of needless blindness because they are either unaware of treatment, or cannot access or afford surgery. Like in most areas of the developing world, in Manang too, cataracts are the leading cause of such needless blindness. It was in this district the Tej Kohli and Ruit Foundation staged an outreach microsurgical eye camp (OMEC) in May, 2022 - screening 832 of the district's 5,645 people, and curing 62 of needless blindness.

A Cure to Support the Whole Family
Tej Kohli & Ruit Foundation patient, Sun Maya Praja, a member of the marginalised Chepang community, who was burdened with household responsibilities she couldn't fulfill due to her blindness. With the help of the Tej Kohli & Ruit Foundation, Sun Maya received surgery performed by Dr. Ruit himself at a microsurgical camp at the Hetauda Community Eye Hospital. The following day, Sun Maya's patches were removed, and she was overjoyed to regain her sight. A week later, a team from the Tej Kohli & Ruit Foundation returned to Sun Maya's village for a follow-up and found that her life had been transformed. She was walking independently, taking care of poultry, performing household chores, and even visiting her brother's family nearby for a cup of tea. Best of all, her niece Pratima hadn't missed a single day of school since Sun Maya's surgery.
